“Architects should be killed”, some politicians have publicly declared. Recent articles have also maintained that “the pressure exerted on architects is unprecedented”, or even asserted that “architects are the last people who should shape our cities”. These statements are undoubtedly alarming. They raise the question: Is the architect still considered useful in our society? And if this is the general perception or even the consensus, is it not urgent to defend the architectural profession? In the face of these questions, we’ll examine the actions taken and the messages conveyed by professional associations in different countries to promote the role of the architect.
